Some of the central questions that have been explored by Latin American and Latinx philosophers are questions of metaphilosophy. "Metaphilosophy" refers to philosophical reflections on the nature of philosophy itself. For example, we might ask: What is the purpose of doing philosophy? How does philosophy compare and contrast with other disciplines, such as science, theology, or literature? And what is the best way of categorizing the different kinds and traditions of philosophy? These are philosophical questions about philosophy as an activity (...) and as a discipline. In this chapter, we discuss some ways that Latin American and Latinx philosophers have addressed these and other metaphilosophical issues. Our focus will be on the following questions: What are the defining characteristics of Latin American philosophy and Latinx philosophy? Do they constitute distinctive traditions of philosophy, and if so, what is especially valuable about these traditions? (shrink)

Academic philosophy's lack of diversity is of concern because it results in a discipline that does not adequately reflect or address the experiences, concerns, and perspectives of many people outside of the dominant demographic. In this article, I examine some of the practical and psychological challenges of entering into dialogue with thinkers whose background knowledge, culture, life experiences, and/or methodologies generate philosophical thought that is radically different from one's own. I contend that in order to build a discipline that is (...) more genuinely dialogical, academic philosophers should embrace this challenging tension between incommensurable worlds of sense. Specifically, I consider how the philosophical practice of translating foreign concepts into terms that have meaning for us might be carried out in a way that preserves radical friction. I warn of the risk of projecting our ideas onto those whose worldviews are incompatible with our own, and I offer strategies for navigating this risk. (shrink)

Studies have shown that a person can consciously believe that they value racial equality and desire not to perpetuate racial stigmas, but unwittingly exhibit racist attitudes and beliefs. In order to explain this discrepancy between conscious beliefs and behavior, scholars have turned their attention to unconscious racial prejudice. One approach that is gaining wide acceptance is the Implicit Bias Model, which appeals to distinct implicit and explicit cognitive processes, coupled with an account of the ways in which people unconsciously internalize (...) widespread stereotypes and stigmas. This article claims that although the Implicit Bias Model is in many respects useful, it leaves out a central aspect of unconscious racial prejudice: the underlying motivations and incentives for harboring racist attitudes and beliefs, which generate psychological resistances to knowing about or changing prejudices. A more complete account of unconscious racial prejudice can be developed by turning to theories of active ignorance, which contribute to what this article calls the Resistance Model. (shrink)

Some proponents of moral bioenhancement propose that people should utilize biomedical practices to enhance the faculties and traits that are associated with moral agency, such as empathy and a sense of justice. The hope is that doing so will improve our ability to meet the moral challenges that have emerged in our contemporary, globalized world. In this paper, we caution against this view by arguing that biomedically inducing more empathy may, in fact, diminish moral agency. We argue that this type (...) of increase in empathy would not be effective for addressing empathy’s vulnerability to the biases that can undermine moral judgment. Furthermore, doing so may undermine the important capacity to regulate empathy. We determine that if the moral enhancement project is to be a serious one, it must address these challenges. (shrink)

This article compares Hannah Arendt's famous essay on Adolf Eichmann's trial in Israel in 1961 to Simone de Beauvoir's little studied piece, "An Eye for an Eye," on the trial of Robert Brasillach in France in 1945. Arendt and Beauvoir each determine the complicity of individuals acting within a political order that seeks to eliminate certain forms of otherness and difference, but come to differing conclusions about the significance of the crimes. I explain Beauvoir's account of ambiguity, on which she (...) draws in her judgment of Brasillach and elaborates in her 1948 Ethics of Ambiguity, ana measure it against Arendt's account of Eichmann's thoughtlessness and its effects on the destruction of conditions of worldly plurality. Linking the failure of ethical judgment on the part of individuals to prior systemic political conditions, Beauvoir helps us recognize struggles over the meaning of bodies and conditions of inequality as central to politics. It has been said that all philosophy begins with a set of concerns and a set of intuitions. With this idea in mind, we ask: Would it be helpful to understand Mexican-American philosophy as a kind of philosophy that begins with the concerns and intuitions of the Mexican-American community? On this view, what distinguishes Mexican-American philosophy is the orientation from which the philosophical investigation proceeds. Such an orientation is shaped by the experiences and relationships that are characteristic of those who (...) identify as Mexican-American. We offer a list of concerns and intuitions that we suggest are widely held by the Mexican-American community. Focusing on questions surrounding linguistic assimilation in the U.S., we illustrate how beginning from these particular starting points might alter the way we think about philosophical issues. In _Politics with Beauvoir_ Lori Jo Marso treats Simone de Beauvoir's feminist theory and practice as part of her political theory, arguing that freedom is Beauvoir's central concern and that this is best apprehended through Marso's notion of the encounter. Starting with Beauvoir's political encounters with several of her key contemporaries including Hannah Arendt, Robert Brasillach, Richard Wright, Frantz Fanon, and Violette Leduc, Marso also moves beyond historical context to stage encounters between Beauvoir and others such as Chantal Akerman, (...) Lars von Trier, Rahel Varnhagen, Alison Bechdel, the Marquis de Sade, and Margarethe von Trotta. From intimate to historical, always affective though often fraught and divisive, Beauvoir's encounters, Marso shows, exemplify freedom as a shared, relational, collective practice. _Politics with Beauvoir_ gives us a new Beauvoir and a new way of thinking about politics—as embodied and coalitional. Les comportements corporels sont souvent considérés comme un langage dont le code est directement interprétable. Dans la plupart des cas, les comportements corporels sont codés de manière continue, probable et iconique. Il faut alors prendre en compte le processus d’inférence à la base d’une représentation de l’état de la personne qui interagit. L’article présente les outils théoriques et méthodologiques de la psychologie qui permettent d’analyser et (...) interpréter les comportements non verbaux. Starting with Richard Wright’s controversial address to the Paris Congress of Black Writers and Authors of 1956, this article explores Wright’s and Simone de Beauvoir’s focus on existential freedom as key to an emancipatory political subjectivity. Both Wright and Beauvoir reject the content of identity formed via oppression, seeking to move beyond categories of culture, religion, femininity and blackness. They argue that solidarity can be better forged across identity groups by nurturing a political subjectivity that recognizes the historical and political (...) impact of embodied identities but is driven by ontological freedom expressed in collective action and dissociation with normative categories. Putting Wright’s 12 Million Black Voices in conversation with Beauvoir’s The Second Sex, we can more fully appreciate Wright’s political writing after he left the United States. Here we see the potential for solidarity across borders, and with women and other oppressed peoples. Most important, we witness these two thinkers imagining political invocations that do not reinforce political meanings given to bodies, thus allowing new forms of solidarity and collective action to emerge. The vast corpus attributed to Jābir b. Ḥayyān includes important elements of shī‘ī doctrine. Alchemy itself is described as an ‘imamic’ science, the purpose of which is to help mankind achieve eschatological fulfillment. This article aims to determine whether these shī‘ī elements are a fundamental part of the original Corpus Jābirianum, or if they are the result of a later set of interpolations. On the basis of one of the oldest jābirian texts, the Kitāb al-Usṭuqus al-uss I, II and III, (...) this article concludes that in jābirian alchemical doctrine, the role of the Imam is fundamental to the reception and spreading of alchemy. At the same time, the idea expressed in this text that the alchemist could achieve a level of wisdom equal to that of the Imam purely through his own research ultimately leads to a weakening of these shī‘ī positions. L'incroyable succes qu'elle connut s'explique par l'actualite d'un de ses themes principaux: la necessite d'une responsabilite nouvelle a l'egard des generations futures. Mais la reception largement negative que provoqua sa vulgarisation dans les domaines de l'ethique envireonnementale ou de la bioethique ne laisse pas de masquer le fondement de cette philosophie et les conditions memes de la mise en place des thematiques nouvelles qui retinrent (...) d'abord l'attention. S'alimentant a des sources tantot cachees, tantot eclectiques, elle s'est developpee au cours de plusieurs periodes dont le philosophe lui-meme disait ne pas voir ce qu'elles avaient en commun... Susceptible d'etre abordee par des voies multiples, cette oeuvre reste encore un defi pour le penseur et l'historien de la philosophie qui veulent la prendre au serieux et qui sont soucieux de la reconstruire et d'en lever tous les mysteres. Beauvoir's writings index the politics of ontological, structural, instrumental, and affective instances of violence. In all cases, she sees violence as a result of political practices. Rather than simply deploring or condemning violence, however, Beauvoir demonstrates that we have to understand that it delineates and is manifest in all our relationships and representations. Nevertheless, we need not accept violence, and indeed, we must struggle against it. Oppressive human relationships situate us as systematically and unequally exposed to violent injury and premature (...) death, and as unequally able to nourish a creative and flourishing life. These conditions are never justified. Beauvoir insists that we must affirm ambiguity and freedom against structural conditions of oppression, and act politically to minimize violence and its tragic effects. (shrink)

L’angle sous lequel Kant aborde le jugement esthétique (de goût) est transcendantal, il s’agit d’établir la possibilité qu’un tel jugement soit de validité universelle et nécessaire. On est donc loin d’une perspective historique sur les arts que développera Hegel. Cependant, les conditions de possibilité recherchées sont celles de jugements appartenant à l’expérience d’individus humains et à celle de l’humanité au cours des siècles. C’est sur la présence de cet aspect temporel du jugement réfléchissant esthétique et de la production des beaux-arts (...) dans la première partie de la troisième Critique et sur ses enjeux que se centre le propos de ce texte. La manière dont la sociologie rend compte d’artifications récentes semble supposer l’existence d’une frontière stable ou stabilisée entre art et non-art à partir de l’émergence moderne de la catégorie des « beaux-arts ». Les études sociologiques concluent par ailleurs au caractère rare et marginal des cas de désartification. En relisant trois paragraphes de la troisième Critique, ce texte vise à introduire des nuances sur ces deux points : le xviii e siècle n’a pas produit de consensus sur une liste « (...) arrêtée » des beaux-arts et certaines désartifications historiques ont atteint des disciplines qui servirent de modèles dans l’émergence même de la catégorie des beaux-arts. L’article s’efforce de mettre en évidence certains traits saillants de l’interprétation par Victor Basch en 1896 de l’esthétique kantienne. Pour ce faire, il se centre sur le thème qu’il juge central du sentiment esthétique et, particulièrement, sur la critique qu’il propose de la thèse de Kant sur la possibilité d’une valeur universelle du jugement esthétique, valeur qui reste néanmoins seulement subjective (sans objectivité). L’article soutient que l’approche par Basch de cette question témoigne du caractère empiriste de ses options ontologico-épistémologiques.

Notion essentielle au croisement de la psychologie, de l'ethique et de l'esthetique de la tradition occidentale, la phantasia des Grecs, devenue imaginatio dans le monde latin avant d'etre traduite dans les differentes langues europeennes, a connu un echo considerable tout au long de l'histoire de la pensee philosophique. Les etudes rassemblees dans le present volume sont issues d'un seminaire et d'une journee d'etudes qui se sont tenus en 2001 a l'Universite catholique de Louvain et aux Facultes Notre-Dame de la Paix (...) de Namur. Elles visent a eclairer l'evolution du sens et du role de la notion au travers d'etapes historiques particulieres, surtout anciennes, s'echelonnant du VIe siecle avant Jesus-Christ au XVIIe siecle de notre ere. La presente exposición, tal como lo sugiere su título, se articulará en tres tiempos, debiendo aportar cada uno su propia luz a la noción de sentido común y así poner en evidencia su fertilidad. Se evocará en primer lugar la figura de Shaftesbury, a quien se puede considerar sobre este punto como un precursor de Kant, incluso si se hace con todas las reservas necesarias- ya que los marcos teóricos de sus respectivos pensamientos difieren considerablemente. En seguida, sin poder desarrollarlo (...) plenamente, nos esforzaremos por indicar el corazón de la noción de sentido común en la tercera Crítica de Kant, su alcance más significativo. Para concluir, se evocará una posibilidad de relectura política de este texto kantiano, relectura que se encuentra bajo la pluma de Hannah Arendt, quien rescata los rasgos más prometedores de esta noción de sentido común para el pensamiento contemporáneo. In this paper, i provide an introduction to development ethics and make some observations about integral human development. i argue that although there is very little dialogue between these two traditions, they have a lot of common ground, and can helpfully inform one another. International development ethics is a largely secular field concerned with ethical reflection on the ends and means of development. i discuss four levels of ethical reflection: meta-ethical, normative, practical, or applied, and personal or integral. The first (...) three of these levels are well established in philosophical ethics. i introduce the fourth with the hope of encouraging more discussion of how individuals engaged in the theory and practice of development ethics ought to navigate the various spheres of their own lives. This last stage of ethical reflection and action can benefit greatly from work done in integral human development. Integral human development is integral in at least two ways: development is not simply economic development, but development the whole person, including social, political, creative, spiritual, etc., and development is the development of every person, whether the person is a marginalize peasant or a powerful élite. i explain why this second way of integration is both less discussed and more radical than the first. Resumen En este artículo, ofrezco una introducción a la ética del desarrollo y hago algunas observaciones sobre el desarrollo humano integral. Sostengo que, aunque hay muy poco diálogo entre estas dos tradiciones, tienen mucho terreno común y pueden ayudarse mutuamente. La ética del desarrollo internacional es un campo ampliamente secular que se ocupa de la reflexión ética sobre los fines y los medios de desarrollo. Discuto cuatro niveles de reflexión ética: meta-ético, normativo, práctico, o aplicado, y personal o integral. Los tres primeros de estos niveles están bien establecidos en la ética filosófica. Presento el cuarto con la esperanza de fomentar una mayor discusión sobre cómo los individuos involucrados en la teoría y la práctica de la ética del desarrollo deben navegar por las diversas esferas de sus propias vidas. Esta última etapa de reflexión y acción ética puede beneficiarse enormemente del trabajo realizado en el desarrollo humano integral. El desarrollo humano integral es integral en al menos dos maneras: el desarrollo no es simplemente desarrollo económico, sino el desarrollo de toda la persona, incluyendo social político, creativo, espiritual etc., y el desarrollo es el desarrollo de cada persona, sea la persona un campesino marginado o una de la ponderosa elite. Explico por qué esta segunda forma de integración es menos discutida y más radical que la primera. (shrink)

Kant est un interlocuteur fréquent et majeur de Hans Jonas. Il l?est assurément en philosophie pratique. Il lui est à la fois un repoussoir et un modèle à cet égard. Le Kant de la première Critique n?est pas non plus absent de l??uvre de Jonas, et il ne l?est pas, en particulier, du Phénomène de la vie , même s?il y est présent de manière assez sporadique. Mais un Kant dont l?absence est notable dans ce projet de biologie philosophique qui (...) entend rétablir, contre les sciences modernes, les droits du concept de finalité, c?est le Kant de la troisième Critique et singulièrement celui qui s?attelle à l?étude du jugement téléologique. Le titre de la Critique de faculté de juger n?est pas mentionné. Cette absence peut faire question et elle donne un angle d?attaque pour interroger le statut du projet jonassien dans le Phénomène de la vie . De manière abrupte : cette absence n?autorise-t-elle pas à penser que le projet est simplement précritique ? Quel autre sens pourrait-on donner à cette absence, et de quels indices dispose-t-on à cet égard ? Détecte-t-on, à seconde vue, une présence implicite de Kant ? On se contentera de poser ici quelques jalons dans l?instruction de ce dossier. Et l?on se gardera bien de prétendre à quelque démonstration que ce soit. Retournons donc à l?énoncé du projet de Jonas, et d?abord, inévitable­ment, à un très bref rappel des thèses kantiennes, pour baliser. (shrink)

Ernst Troeltschs Analysen einer Familien- und Ehe- bzw. Sexualethik einzelner historischer Ausprägungen des Christentums weisen die normativen Bedenken, die sein Werk “Die Soziallehren der christlichen Kirchen und Gruppen” prägen, aus. Im Zuge der Beschreibung der Anschauungen von Geschlecht und Familie, die den jeweiligen Idealtypus von Kirche, Sekte und Mystizismus charakterisieren, untersucht Troeltsch zugleich auch eine zeitgenössische christliche Konzeption von Gleichheit und Ungleichheit, während er konkurrierende Modelle sozialer Beziehung und Organisation kritisch in den Blick nimmt. Zudem sind Troeltschs Gedanken die geschlechterspezifischen (...) Dimensionen eines jeden Idealtypus betreffend von zentraler Bedeutung für eine exakte Bestimmung seiner soziologischen Kategorien und typologischen Unterscheidungen. Sie verdienen darum nicht bloß genauere Beachtung, sondern sind notwendig, will man die gelehrten und politischen Debatten, die Troeltsch als Historiker und Kulturtheoretiker beeinflußten, verstehen. The impact of Darwin's work in biology is widely known; we present here a less known aspect which is that of applying Darwin's ideas in physics, and how this may relate with the transition from pre-life to life. Darwin's work on the origin of species was a breakthrough not only because of its explanation of how different species came to exist but also because the extinction of a species is caused not only by the charactenstics of the species, but in (...) large degree by the charactenstics of the environment. In contrast, in Newton's approach to physics, the environment was seen as neutral and inert. The goal of this article is to portray how quantum Darwinism helps to clarify the transition from Physics to pre-life. (shrink)

Les prédications eckhartiennes qui nous sont parvenues, sont au nombre d’environ 100 en latin, et de 120 en moyen haut allemand. La critique situe la plus grande partie de ces prédications allemandes dans la dernière décennie de la vie d’Eckhart. Mais son intérêt pour la prédication est présent dans son œuvre dès le début et accompagne toute sa carrière. En particulier, ce qui caractérise son travail homilétique par rapport aux maîtres en théologie, ses contemporains, semble bien être l’usage de la (...) langue vulgaire et le soin particulier apporté à la mise en forme littéraire et à la publication de ces prédications. D’où la question posée : pourquoi cet intérêt pour l’usage de la langue vulgaire? L’attention dans cette étude se concentre donc sur les prédications allemandes et à ce propos sont traités deux arguments qui paraissent particulièrement significatifs. Le premier se concentre sur la nécessité de leur recontextualisation liturgique. En effet, l’aspect liturgique a été complètement occulté dans l’édition critique et la littérature. Le second se manifeste par la nécessité d’explorer le caractère littéraire des prédications, qui ne sont pas de fait “reportées” par des auditeurs (-trices), mais ont été rédigées et publiées par les soins de l’auteur lui-même. Enfin il faut noter comme caractéristique de l’homilétique eckhartienne, le lien essentiel entre locutio emphatica et discours démonstratif (« natiurlîche rede ») : l’examen de quelques textes tirés de la Défense d’Eckhart (1326) tente d’éclairer ce concept.
